Chapter 4
Diamonds and Hexagons
Diamonds and hexagons are such fun shapes. Deciding whether to piece or appliqué these quilts took some thought. When working with lines that are not simple angles, the piecing can be difficult to structure for easy repetition (that kind of geometry is not my strong suit!). Park Estate seemed a natural for piecing, but Molecule and Facets were a better fit for appliqué. I love the directness of appliqué—you can design exactly the shape you want and put it exactly where you want. The rhythm of the process of stitching over the raw edges of the appliqué is one of my favorite parts of quilting.
